This event on San Juan, Orcas, Lopez, and Shaw Islands invites participants of all ages to help make our community litter free by the sea.
SAN JUAN COUNTY, WA. September 11, 2023 – Join your fellow islanders for the 2023 Fall Great Islands Clean-up, happening on Saturday, September 30. This bi-annual event invites participants of all ages to make a positive impact on our environment by signing up to collect trash along designated beaches and roads. The collected trash will be brought to a central meeting spot for counting and proper disposal.
The 2023 Fall Great Islands Clean-up promises to be an inspiring day of community unity, environmental stewardship, and collective action. Don’t miss this opportunity to make a lasting impact and help protect the beauty of the San Juan Islands.
“The Great Islands Clean-up is a fantastic opportunity for our community to unite and address the global issue of plastic pollution,” said Katie Fleming, San Juan County’s Solid Waste Coordinator. “Last spring, we saw the incredible dedication of 301 volunteers who collected an impressive 4,574 pounds of trash. Let’s make this fall’s event even more impactful!”
This event is coordinated by San Juan County’s Department of Environmental Stewardship Solid Waste Program, in collaboration with dedicated partners including Orcas Recycling Services, Lautenbach Recycling, Lopez Solid Waste Disposal District, San Juan Sanitation, Friends of the San Juans, the Stewardship Network of the San Juans, and numerous other individual business and service group volunteers. This event is supported, in part, by the Washington State Department of Ecology Community Litter Cleanup Program.
